C. Henri Labbe Taken by Death – French Consul Member of Legion of Honor

Charles Henri Labbe, 60, dean of the Portland consular corps, died early yesterday at his home, 2133 Southwest Vista avenue. He became ill only a few hours previously.

Native of Portland, Mr. Labbe served as French consular agent here since 1899 and vice-counsul for Belgium since 1909. He was signally honored in 1933 when the French government gave him the greatest honor it can bestow—induction into the French Legion of Honor.

Mr. Labbe followed his brother, Dr. Edmond J. Labbe, prominent obstetrician, in death by only eight days.

Another brother is Antoine G. Labbe, besides whom other survivors are the widow and three children, C. Henri Labbe Jr., student at Stanford university, Edmond L. Labbe, student at University of Oregon, and Helen Angeline Labbe, pupil at Lincoln high school.

Mr. Labbe was born October 25, 1874, the son of two of Portland's early-day citizens, John and Angeline Mathiot Labe.

He completed his preparatory schooling here, received his bachelor of arts degree at Leland Stanford and his LL.B. degree from the New York law school in 1898. He was admitted to practice law in Oregon the same year.

He was twice married, in 1905 to Miss Myra L. Bradley of Bridal Veil, who died a few years later, and in 1913 to Miss Laura Lytle.

Mr. Labbe was manager of the Labbe estate for many years; president for one year of Multnomah Amateur Athletic club, 12 years president of the Riverview Cemetery association, succeeding William M. Ladd; chairman of the Taxpayers' league; charter member of the University club, Portland Chamber of Commerce and Multnomah Golf club. From 1928 to 1931 he was a member of the county tax supervising and conservation committee, his only public office besides his consular offices.

During his 36 years as French consul, Mr. Labbe greeted many prominent figures of that country when they came to Portland, among them being General Foch and General Joffre.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in the J. P. Finley chapel, with the Very Rev. H. W. Ramsey, dean of St. Stephen's cathedral, officiating. Interment will be at Riverview cemetery.
