Marshall Calloway Atkins was the only son (and eldest child) of James Atkins and his third wife Lydia Swinney Byrd, of Grayson Co., Virginia. His younger sisters were Melissa Atkins, and Thurza Atkins.

Sergeant, Co. G, 63rd Regiment, Virginia Infantry (McMahon's), CSA.
Enlisted 5/16/1862 at Camp Jackson, Wytheville, Virginia.
Wounded in action at Chickamauga, Georgia 9/20/1863.
Promoted to 5th Sergeant 5/31/1864,
Promoted to 4th Sergeant 8/21/1864.

Married Nancy Isabella Hill in Grayson Co., Virginia in about 1852-1853 time frame.
They had nine children:
- Churchwell Friel Atkins,
- Robert Miles Atkins,
- James R. Atkins,
- George Leftwich Atkins,
- Elizabeth E. Atkins,
- William Kemper Atkins,
- Hillary Thomas Atkins,
- John Heath Atkins, and
- an unnamed baby boy born in 1872.

Married Elizabeth Caroline Atkins Fisher on May 16, 1875 in Grayson Co., Virginia.
They had three children:
- Coretta Matilda Atkins,
- Laura Victoria Atkins, and
- Bertha Atkins.

Family records indicate that M. C. Atkins was buried in the Joshua Moore family burying ground, on Joshua Moore's land, in the Beulah neighborhood of Surry Co., North Carolina.

Records indicate that after his passing, his surviving heirs, sons William Kemper Atkins and John Heath Atkins, and wife Elizabeth Caroline Atkins donated, in 1892, three acres from his estate for the construction of the Beulah Methodist Church, which had been founded in 1889.
