John Charles Prohaska was born in April of 1861 in Prague Bohemia to John Prohaska and his wife Josephine (Krokil/Crkal/Cirkl). John was the second oldest of ten Prohaska siblings - eight of whom lived to adulthood - six brothers and two sisters. The Prohaska family emigrated from Bohemia to the United States arriving in New York on May 23, 1867 on the ship Atlantic. They lived first in Greenfield Township, Michigan outside of Detroit, farming land adjacent to that of John Prohaska the younger's Uncle Jacob and Aunt Catherine Prohaska Yelinek. By 1873 John and his parents and siblings were farming and living in the Beaverton, Michigan area later moving into Bay City. John worked as a bookkeeper, lumber inspector and grader and sometimes manager in a number of Bay City lumber companies. On October 4, 1887 in Bay City, Michigan he married Emma Minnie Vanek who had also been born in Bohemia. They had three children: Leslie Clarence Prohaska, Clara Mae (Elsie) Prohaska Ross, Laura Etta Prohaska Mack. John eventually took work at a lumber company in Los Angeles and then moved on to a lumber company in Portland, Oregon. He and his wife Emma and children moved to Portland around 1919. John Prohaska died January 21, 1932 in Portland, Oregon.
