The Rev. JOHN V. DOYLE, 88, of Mount Saint Rita Health Center, Sumner Brown Road, pastor emeritus of SS. John & Paul Church in Coventry, died yesterday at home.

Born in Woonsocket, a son of the late Luke A. Doyle Sr. and Margaret (Hewitt) Doyle, he was educated in Woonsocket public schools. A graduate of Providence College, he also attended had St. Bernard's Seminary, in Rochester, N.Y., and St. Mary's Seminary, in Baltimore, Md.

He was ordained on June 7, 1941, at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence on June 7, 1941, and celebrated his first Solemn Mass on June 8, 1941, at Sacred Heart Church, in Woonsocket.

After brief assignments at St. Philomena Church, in Narragansett, the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, in Providence, and Sacred Heart Church, in Pawtucket, he had served at Assumption Parish, in Providence, from 1942 to 1959; at Blessed Sacrament, in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence, from 1959 to 1964; and as a part-time chaplain to the Rhode Island School of Design.

On June 16, 1964, the Bishop Russell J. McVinney appointed him to serve as pastor of SS. John & Paul Parish, in Coventry, where he oversaw the construction of the SS. John & Paul School and rectory in 1966, and of an addition to the church in 1979. He became pastor emeritus in 1979.

Father Doyle had been elected to several terms as a diocesan senator, and had served for many years as dean, and later, as Episcopal Vicar, of the Pawtuxet Valley.

He also had served for many years as chaplain of the Coventry Police Department.

He leaves two nieces, Nancy P. Bliss of Cumberland and Deborah M. Finn of Narragansett. He was the brother of the late Luke A. Doyle Jr.

The funeral will be on Thursday, at Sacred Heart Church, Second Avenue, Woonsocket, where the body will lie in state, beginning at 9 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10, also in the church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Slatersville, Burrillville.
