Nellie J. Bartels, 93, of Westgate, Iowa died on Wednesday morning, December 11, 2013 at the Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein, Iowa.

Private Family Graveside Service at the St. Peter Cemetery at Westgate, Iowa; Officiating: Rev. Herbert C. Mueller III of St. Peter Lutheran Church; Visitation: from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa where there will be a prayer service at 4:00 P.M. on Friday.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Westgate Library Fund or to St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Nellie Jane Carlson was born on March 14, 1920 at Geraldine, Montana, the daughter of Carl Edward and Sarah Etta (Corbin) Carlson. She graduated from Geraldine High School in 1937. Nellie moved to Washington State, then to North Dakota and later to Iowa in 1938. Nellie was united in marriage to Donald Frederick Bartels on June 4, 1938 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They farmed west of Westgate, Iowa for many years. Nellie was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Society. She has been a resident of the Oelwein Health Care Center since October of 2011. She loved gardening, her two cats and living on the farm.

Nellie is survived by: 2 Daughters—Teresa (Larry) Jeans of Plainfield, Ia. and Tamara (James) Wolff of Readlyn, Ia.; 5 Grandchildren—Aaron Wolff, Andrew Wolff, Laurie Jeans, Heather (Matt) Holmes and Eric (Becky) Jeans; 5 Great Grandchildren; 3 Nephews; 2 Half-Brothers—Richard Carlson of Raleigh, North Carolina and Tom McArthur of Collinsville, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband (Donald F. Bartels on October 29, 1999), sister (Marian Scribner) and a brother (Carl "Bud" Carlson).
