Longtime Newberry resident, Donald D. Salter, 86, died early Monday morning December 9, 2013 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

Born December 29, 1926 in Red Granite, Wisconsin, son of the late Arthur and Margaret Salter, Don moved to Strongs at an early age and, in his youth, was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. Don was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army until his honorable discharge on April 7, 1947. Don held various employments in the Newberry area including Ernie's Family Service gas station and Beaulieu Furniture and Funeral Home. He later was employed at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse for 25 years until his retirement. Don was a member of the Newberry United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #74 both of Newberry.

In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by his son Robert in 1989 and siblings Emily and Ruby. Survivors include his loving wife, the former Gertrude Thompson of Newberry, whom he married August 17, 1946; son Mark (Linda) Salter of Mt. Morris; daughter-in-law Lynn Salter of Newberry; grandchildren Sharolyn (Leonard) Rybka, Debra Tucker, Patricia (Robert) Williams, Mark Jr. (Laura) Salter, William Goff, Steven Goff and Miqua Goff; 16 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Newberry United Methodist Church on Friday December 13, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and also on Saturday December 14, 2013 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Reverend Tim Callow officiating. Following the funeral services, military honors will be conducted by the members of the American Legion Post #74. Interment will take place in the spring of 2014 at Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Post #74 or the Newberry United Methodist Church in his memory.
