John Slator, a soldier in the army of Count de Rochambeau, arrived with the fleet off of Rhode Island in 1780, served in the battle of White Plains, was present at the surrender of Cornwallis and continued in service until discharged at Wilmingon, Delaware, May 9, 1783. He was a pioneer of Donegal Township, Butler County, PA

aka Johannes Claudius Schledorn enrolled in the legion of Lauzun July 2, 1779. He was engaged as a light horse soldier in Lauzun's 1st squad of Hussars. His French military record read: "Jean Schletor, Son of Jean and Margera Dienne (no maiden name given), native of L'ormesheim, Provence of Empire Jurisdiction of Bliescastel, Age of 22 years, Stature of? complexion, reddish; nose broad; eyes, blue; hair and eyebrows, light brown. Date of enrollment: 2 July 1779. Date of discharge: deserted to America 30 April, 1783 at Wilmington, DE. Military record filed: Box 8 Yc 17 legion de Lauzun.

Because of his service to America during the Revolutionary War, he was granted citizenship without having to go through the naturalization process. His name was anglicized to John Slaytor/Slater and he settled in Pennsylvania.

Gravesite Details

The site of the old Butler Cemetery was used to build the original Butler Senior High School in 1908. Families were given the opportunity to move the remains. It is unknown if his remains were moved to another cemetery. I am still searching.
