AIR MEDAL

George Donald Lindberg ("Don") passed away peacefully at his home in Pensacola, FL on December 14, 2013. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who left a legacy of family, faith and integrity.

Don was born on February 9, 1925 in Salt Lake City, UT to George Hyrum Lindberg and Bertha Jones Godfrey. He had four older sisters - Carol, Gayle, Faye and May - all of whom preceded him in death. When he was two, his family moved to Phoenix, AZ where his father was a mortician. In 1943 he graduated from Union High School in Phoenix where he excelled in baseball. He also fondly remembered delivering newspapers and working at the movie theater where he got to watch all the latest movies. On the night he graduated from high school he, along with a number of his classmate's, boarded a bus and headed to San Diego, CA to enlist in the US Navy. He trained at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, TN and was assigned to the USS Bunker Hill, an aircraft carrier in the fleet under Admiral Halsey's command in the Pacific. He flew as a tail gunner and radioman on the TBM-3 Avenger. He flew 22 missions including several over Tokyo and was part of the squadron that sunk the Yamato, the flagship of the Japanese Navy. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross along with four Air Medals for his service in the US Navy.

After WWII he pursued his education in microbiology. He received his bachelor's degree from Arizona State, his masters from Oklahoma A&M and his Ph.D in Plant Pathology from the University of Wisconsin. It was at Wisconsin that he met the love of his life, Jean Anne Feucht, of Buffalo, NY. They were married on August 25, 1954 and spent their honeymoon camping in Yellowstone and the Tetons.

They soon moved to Baton Rouge, LA where Don began a 37 year career (1954 - 1991) at Louisiana State University in the Plant Pathology Department. He was mainly a research scientist and worked predominately with rice, developing new varieties to produce greater harvests and that would be disease and drought resistant. Don also served as major professor to graduate students and was one of the first researchers to discover a transmissible disease in fungi. This bacterium produced an antibiotic that was lethal to fungi. He loved working at LSU and loved his TIGERS! The many friendships they developed in Baton Rouge have been a great blessing in the lives of Don and Jean.

Upon retirement, Don and Jean moved to Pensacola, FL in 1991. They enjoyed being close to the beach and having their children and grandchildren visit. In their 22 years of living in Pensacola they have again been blessed with many wonderful friends.

He was a product of the Great Depression and WWII - and lived life providently and by principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Don was a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout his life. He served in numerous capacities and quietly blessed the lives of others.

He loved to listen to his albums of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond. He also loved baseball and was a big St. Louis Cardinal fan. He avidly enjoyed playing solitaire and working crossword puzzles. He also loved to take his family on long road trips across the country, always camping along the way.

Don is survived by his wife, Jean; their three children -Susie Andersen (Marietta, GA), Don Lindberg and his wife, Sue (San Antonio, TX) and Ann Powell and her husband, Mike (San Diego, CA). 9 grandchildren - Neil & Valerie Andersen (Sacramento, CA), Jeff & Allison Andersen (Las Vegas, NV), Lori & Jared Croft (Ft. Collins, CO), Brad & Courtney Andersen (Augusta, GA), Brady & Sara Lindberg (Bountiful, UT), Ali & Ryan Griffith (San Antonio, TX), Lindy Powell, Andi Powell and Bailee Powell (Provo, UT). And 8 great-grandchildren. Eastern Gate Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
