LILA SCHNEIDER

Girl, 5, is County's 24th Traffic Fatality This Year
Killed When Car Is Struck By a Train Near Collins
Traffic deaths in the county this year mounted to 24 late Friday when a five-year-old girl was killed as the car in which she was riding was struck by a Soo line combination freight and passenger train on a grade crossing on County Trunk J, a mile east of the village of Collins.
The girl's parents and a younger sister were seriously injured in the accident, second of its kind in the county yesterday.
(snip)Leila Schneider(sic), 5, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schneider, Rockland, was killed when the car driven by her father was hit by the train near Collins.
The injured: Henry Schneider, 47, driver of the car. Broken arm, leg bruises.
Mrs. Henry Schneider, 45, lacerations and cuts about the head and arms. Severe body bruises and possible internal injuries.
Daughter 2 (private). Broken leg and scalp lacerations.
The accident happened as the Schneiders were driving east on County Trunk J on their way to Valders, to do some shopping and call for (Private), a son and student in the Valders high school. The Schneider home is located on Highway 32 about a mile out of Collins. It was raining at the time and Schneider's view of the track was partly obscurred.

Tried To Swerve Car
The driver tried desperately to swerve his car to the right as the engine of the Soo train, wesbound from Manitowoc, reached the crossing. The cow catcher of the engine struck the front of the car, picked it up and carried it westward along the rails. The sedan was rolled over on its side and into the ditch south of the track.
Leila Schneider was thrown out of the automobile and alongside the track. The child's skull was crushed.E.C. Himley, Soo station agent at Collins, was an eye-witness of the accident.
He was standing on the station platform down the track and saw the Schneider car as it was struck by the engine.
The train was in charge of Engineer Ernst E. Kruck and Conductor W.F. Otis and was brought to a quick stop. The Schneider car was righted and Mr. and Mrs. Schneider and their daughter, (Private), were brought to the Holy Family hospital in this city by Dr. R.S. Simonson of Valders, who was called to the scene.
Coroner Gerald Rau and Sheriff Norman Berkedal were summoned
