Pate Beane was the son of John Squire and Martha Elizabeth Leonard Bean. He was born in rural Hermitage Springs, Clay Co., TN. He received 2 medical degrees, one from the University of TN and one from Vanderbilt University. As a young man he delivered the mail for his father who was the Postmaster at Hermitage Springs and taught school. The addition of the "e" was an error made by the medical school on his diploma and it was too difficult to correct. Thereafter his sons had to have the "e" on the end of Beane as well. Dr. Pate cared for his community in Clay and Macon Counties of TN. His niece, Martha Elizabeth Tinsley followed him on his patient rounds inspiring her to become a nurse. He married Emma Tennessee Smith and they had 2 sons, Willie Estis Beane and Carson Lee Beane. Neither son had any children. He and Tennessee divorced and he depended on his sister, Bernetta Bean Tinsley to care for his sons when he moved to West Virginia to practice medicine for the coal miners. While he died in Alabama, he is buried in Keystone, McDowell Co., West Virginia. His son Carson died in 1931 in Nashville, TN. His son Willie continued to be close with his Aunt Bernetta and her family until his death in Nashville in 1972.

Keystone Physician Died While Visiting in Alabama
Coming as a shock to his many friends throughout McDowell county was the sudden death of Dr. W. P. Beane, prominent Keystone physician. He died Wednesday afternoon at the home of his brother in Sheffield, Ala, whom he and his wife had been visiting. He came to McDowell county about 30 years ago and began his practice at Keystone, first being associated with Dr. HG Steele, now of Bluefield. Later he was a physician for the Houston coal interest but several years ago established a private practice. Surviving are his widow, the former Mrs. Alice Winston of Keystone and two adopted daughters, Elizabeth, a student at Marshal college and June, who attends school at Keystone. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Bluefield-Bramwell road."
