Editor of the Mining Journal, long time newspaper of Marquette. Mayor of Marquette. Member of the Michigan House of Represntatives 1871-1872. Ran for the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Michigan (finished 3rd). Appointed by President Grover Cleveland to be second Governor of the District of Alaska 1885-1889.

Alfred P. Swineford was a son of Samuel and Jane Swineford of Ashland, Ohio. Alfred married as his first wife Psyche Flower, probably around 1856, and they were living in Minnesota Territory in 1857 with no children. After she died, Alfred married as his second wife Minnie E. (Marks) Smith on 21 Aug 1886 in Baraga, MI.
