Edith Heerschap passed away at Prestige Assisted Living on Dec. 17, 2013, at the age of 92. She was born in Paterson, N.J., and had resided in Sierra Vista, Ariz., since October 1993.

Edith was born on Oct. 8, 1921, in Paterson, N.J.

She was a full-time homemaker until the youngest children were in school, and then she entered the workforce by working in the PS No. 18 school cafeteria. And while she never achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse, she was a dedicated nurse's aide at Van Dyke's Nursing Home in Ridgewood, N.J. for many years.

She met her husband Walter while working as a waitress in a diner across the street from where he worked. They fell in love and married on November 23, 1939. They lived and loved in Paterson, raising their eight children until Walter's death in October 1983.

Edith remained in Paterson until 1993, when she relocated to Sierra Vista, AZ, to live with her daughter Dawn.

Over the years in Paterson, she was an active member of Epworth United Methodist Church. She was also a member of The Republican Women's Club, a Cub Scout den mother, and held various positions within the Parent-Teacher Association, including president at the school and county level. Well into her late 60s Edith drove a truck as a volunteer, picking up bulk food products for a church-run food program in Paterson.

While Edith received numerous awards for her service to the church and her community, she was most proud of raising eight children who all grew up to be contributing members of our society.

Edith is preceded in death by husband, Walter Heerschap; sons, Kenneth and Alan; and great-grandson, Christopher.

Edith is survived by her children, Walter (Judy Senior), Martin (Candy), Leslie Owen (Harold), Gwen (Joel Berger), Dawn (Roger Hughes), and Heidi Kopitar.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 AM on January 14, 2014, at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church.
