David Elliott Hipp, Jr., AIA, 85, of Charlotte, died on June 16, 2013 in his residence at Sharon Towers.

Mr. Hipp was born on September 26, 1927 in Charlotte, a seventh generation native of Mecklenburg County. He was the son of the late David Elliott Hipp, Sr. and Bessie Christine Tevepaugh Hipp. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Mary Stewart Barnhardt Hipp, and also by his sister, Aileen Hipp Thomason, and a brother, John Rae Hipp.

Mr. Hipp graduated from Harding High School and from Davidson College, class of 1949. After service in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the occupying forces in Austria, he studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute and at Parsons School of Design in New York City. He received the degree of Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University and practiced architecture for many years in Charlotte, specializing in commercial interior design.

Mr. Hipp was a ruling elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church, and sang in the church choir for more than 50 years. He contributed enormous talent and dedication to enriching the worship life of the congregation through the visual arts. In May 2013 he was presented an Outstanding Older Adult Award by the Presbytery of Charlotte.

Mr. Hipp is survived by his son, David Elliott Hipp III and his wife, Eleanor Scudder, of Newton Highlands, Massachusetts; and by his daughter, Amy Barnhardt Hipp Gant and her husband, Rick Gant, of Columbia, South Carolina. Additional survivors include four grandchildren, David Townsend Hipp and Amanda Scudder Hipp of Newton Highlands, Massachusetts, and William Russell Gant and Kathleen Stewart Gant of Columbia, South Carolina; his brother, Thomas A. Hipp and his wife, Langhorne Hipp of Greenville, South Carolina; his nieces, Amanda Berry of Denver, North Carolina, Jane Flury of Southlake, Texas, Katrina Cantler of Brevard, Christie Earl of Waxhaw, and his goddaughter Virginia Phillippi of Greenville, South Carolina; his nephews, Al Hipp of Greenville, South Carolina, Clark Hipp of Wilmington, and Craig Hipp of Lincolnton; many cousins, including Ann Mitchell of Wayland, Massachusetts and Jeannie Clark of Richmond, Virginia; and cherished nieces, nephew and cousins in the family of his late wife.
