Samuel Dicker, aged 91, of Deerfield, IL, died on December 21, 2013.


Born in Horodenka, Poland* and a WW II Veteran, he was the beloved husband of the late Dora, (nee Garkofsky); loving father of Alan (Julia), Steven (Joanne), Brian (Jenifer) and the late Marc; adored Zayde of Lisa (Greg)Savran, Adam, Scott, Danny and Andy Dicker; Sam was preceded in death by his parents Aaron and Sarah and his siblings, Max, Meyer, Rosie, Fischel and Ruthie.


Arrangements handled by The Goldman Funeral Group, Buffalo Grove, IL. Service at Eternal Light, Brooklyn, NY. Interment at Old Montefiore Cemetery, Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY.

The fate of this province was disputed between Poland and Ukraine, until the Peace of Riga in 1921 but is today located in the Ukraine.


During World War II, the Jewish population of Horodenka, comprising about half of the town's population, were shot and killed in a mass grave by the Nazis. About a dozen Jews survived and formed a partisan combat unit which fought against the Nazis and hid in the forests.


There is a synagogue in Salford, England named in honour of this community.
