Alice Isabel Hancock Barnes, 97, died at her home, 211 W. Poplar St., Harrisburg, on the morning of Christmas Eve following a long illness.

Mrs. Barnes was born in Stonefort on Oct. 22, 1916. Her parents were William Myers and Della Craig Hancock. After attending school in Stonefort through 10th grade, she lived with her brother Lynndon Hancock in Harrisburg and graduated from Harrisburg High School in the class of 1934. She then attended Ward Belmont, in Nashville, Tenn., and the University of Illinois, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.

After her daughters had left home, Mrs. Barnes worked as bookkeeper in her husband's business, Barnes Lumber Company, founded by his grandfather in 1898. She was active in the community, serving as treasurer of the Harrisburg Medical Center Auxiliary for many years, and also as treasurer of Chapter Z, PEO, for a number of years.

By far her most dedicated service was to the public library. She was a member of the board of trustees of Mitchell-Carnegie Library, now Harrisburg District Library, for 52 years, retiring as president in 1999.

While her husband was still active, they traveled extensively, often going to blackjack tournaments where he competed enthusiastically, and she, as she liked to say, "carried the coin purse."

She was preceded in death by her husband; her brothers, Lynndon Hancock and Olen Craig Hancock; nephews, Craig Hancock, John Booth and Robert Reynolds; and a niece, Mary Alice Garrison.

Surviving to treasure her memory are her daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and David Clemmons of Harrisburg and Barbara and Robert Luce of Riverside, Con; her grandchildren, Dallas Clemmons and wife Beth of Lake Forest, Calif, Melinda Blackorby and husband Jose of Oakland, Calif, Ned Luce and wife Elise Kraemer of Philadelphia, Alisa Barnes of Oakland, Calif, and Rob Luce and wife Mary of Johannesburg, South Africa; her great-grandchildren, George Clemmons, Eliza Jane and Alice Isabel Blackorby, Anna Rose Luce, Georgia Rae Luce, Rachel Ping Luce, Oliver Barnes Luce and Loula Frances Barnes. Additional survivors are nieces, Martha Culley and Cynthia Griffiths; and nephew, William Hancock.

The family acknowledges with gratitude the loving service of her caregivers, who made it possible for her to fulfill her goal of remaining in her own home: Becky Alvey, Charbelle Collins, Kim Pumphrey and Kim Saar.

A memorial service will be held at Reed Funeral Home 2pm Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, followed by interment in Sunset Hill. Friends may call from 1-2pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Harrisburg District Library. Daily Register, Posted Dec. 26, 2013.
