KATHARINE ELLIS OBITUARY Katharine Bell Ellis, 94, died peacefully at home Sunday, November 7, 2004. She was born in Savannah in 1910. She was affectionately known by family and friends as "Katchie". Mrs. Ellis was the daughter of the late Malcolm Bell and Laura Palmer Bell and was a fourth generation Savannahian. She attended the Massie School in Savannah and graduated from The Hartridge School in Plainfield, New Jersey. Mrs. Ellis loved life and had a great appreciation for family, friends, travel and horticulture. She was an enthusiastic member of the Trustees' Garden Club and she was active in many of its beautification projects in the historic area of Savannah. She was a member of Christ Church, where she was for many years a member of the Altar Guild. She was a former member of the Colonial Dames of Savannah and the Junior League of Savannah. In addition, she contributed much of her time as a volunteer for the Bethesda Home for Boys. She was the widow of Charles Ellis, Jr. who died in Savannah in 1964. Mrs. Ellis was preceded in death by her brother Malcolm Bell, Jr., a noted historian and author, and her sister Laura Bell Barrow. She is survived by her two children, Charles Ellis III of Savannah and Katharine Ellis Elsas and her husband Herbert Alan Elsas of Atlanta, a brother, Lt. Col. Frank G. Bell, USAF Ret; her sister-in-law Muriel Barrow Bell, two grandsons, Herbert Alan Elsas, Jr. of New York City and Charles Ellis Elsas of Atlanta, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews who gathered each year for her special Christmas day celebration. The family would like to express special appreciation and gratitude to Angela Bailey, Leila Bowen, Viola Broadus, Janie Evans, Katina Evans, Wanda Felix, Lorene Mitchell and Nell Robinson for their devoted care. Graveside Service will be held in Bonaventure Cemetery on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. Remembrances: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Trustees' Garden Club Endowment Fund, 39 East 51st, Savannah, Ga. 31405; to Christ Church, 18 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA. 31401; The Savannah Country Day School, 824 Stillwood Drive, Savannah, GA. 31419.
