There are no calling hours. A celebration of John and Norma's life and love will be held at the convenience of the family.
Norma Loraine (Fish) Daly was born in Frankfort, the daughter of Fred and Lulu (Bennett) Fish. She graduated from Herkimer High School and went to work for the Remington Rand Company during W.W. II. She met and married Capt. John F Daly (USAF) in 1946. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary September 14, 2009. Norma worked while John attended Syracuse University . They resided in Syracuse and North Syracuse from 1948 until 1962 where Norma started raising her family. They moved to Cayuga in 1962, becoming active in the community while raising their children until they retired to Union Springs in 1993. The last two years they resided at Ashton Place in Clifton Springs.
Like many women of "her generation," Norma was a "stay at home mom," chauffeur and professional volunteer. John and Norma were involved in the Andrews Memorial Methodist Church in North Syracuse for many years. They especially enjoyed being part of the "Couples Club." While living in Syracuse they became friends with a young man who attended their church and was studying at SU. Their dear friend, the Rev. Elia Peter, and his wife, Navamani, became part of the family and visited several times while the Dalys lived in Cayuga and Union Springs. John and Norma were very proud of Elia's accomplishments as he became one of the few Methodist Bishops in India.
During their years in Cayuga, Norma and John became very active in the Cayuga United Methodist Church. Norma spent time as a Sunday school teacher, Youth Group Leader and Cub Scout Leader. Norma and John were part of many youth group trips. She was a long time member of the Cayuga United Methodist Women where she served in a variety of positions. She especially enjoyed the Women's Bible Study group and often hosted their Monday morning meetings in her home. She and John attended their children's activities in the Union Springs School District and were staunch supporters of the district. Norma worked as a Teacher Aide at the Cayuga Elementary School for a short time. She truly loved the experience of having so many young children and devoted teachers to work with. In 1966 Norma was honored by Cayuga County for her volunteer work with youth. In 1966-67, Norma and John hosted Maria Stape, an AFS exchange student from Brazil. Norma never turned anyone away. She was a friend to all and collector of both people and "stray animals." She was especially fond of cats and had "multiples" of them in her home. She always had at least one on her lap.
Norma loved the Adirondacks. She and John celebrated 60 consecutive years of camping at Fish Creek Ponds Campsite near Saranac Lake with many friends they had met there. They often brought "extra kids" and they always brought the cat. Norma kept the campfire going and kept everyone fed during many long afternoon water skiing sessions. They also loved traveling, both foreign and domestic and shared many camping trips and excursions with friends and family over the years. Disney World, Cape Cod, and Europe were among her favorite destinations.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Ron) Chretien; sons, Todd and Kevin (Mary) Daly; grandsons, Tim (Erin) Chretien, Kevin Chretien and Ryan Daly; a granddaughter, Erin (Andrew) Watkins (and baby due in September); two great-grandsons, Cody and Cole Chretien (Tim); sister, Ethel (Bob) Burns; and dear friends Donna and Carlton Brier.
Norma was predeceased just six weeks earlier by John Daly, her husband, companion, friend, and dance partner of 63 years. She was also predeceased by her parents, Fred and Lulu (Bennett) Fish; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Volk; and a beloved nephew, Paul Volk, Jr.
