Fernando "Ferd" Aviles January 5, 1920 - July 24, 2010

Fernando "Ferd" Aviles, 90, of Berrien Springs died Saturday, July 24, 2010 in Berrien Springs.

Services celebrating his life will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, July 28, at the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in St. Joseph. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery where Military Rites will be conducted by the North Berrien Military Team. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday at the Dey-Florin Chapel where Masonic Rites will be conducted by the Lake Shore Masonic Lodge #298 at 7 PM. Memorials may be made to the Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation.

Ferd was born on January 5, 1920 in Benton Harbor to Fernando and Jennie Aviles. He proudly served in the US Army during WW II in the European Theater and has been a lifetime member of the 34th Infantry Division Association called the Red Bulls. He married his wife, Catherine "Skip" Bush, on June 22, 1946 in Benton Harbor and she preceded him in death on August 13, 1995. Together they celebrated 49 years of marriage. Ferd was a supervisor at several manufacturing companies in the area and retired from Gast Manufacturing in 1985. He was also active in and a life member of the Lake Shore Masonic Lodge # 298. Ferd enjoyed fishing and hunting and was always tinkering with something with a tool in his hand. Besides being hardworking and patriotic Ferd was a loving and devoted family oriented husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his daughters, Jeanette (Roger) Sliter of Indianapolis, IN and Kathy Mansfield of Berrien Springs; his sisters, Margaret (James) Gillette of St. Joseph, Helen Crane of Benton Harbor, and Mariana Kirkeby of St. Joseph; his grandchildren, Paul (Heather) Sliter, Jeremy (Marnie) Mansfield, Beth (Stephen) Green, and Amy (Jayson) McGrath and his 4 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, a half sister, and a son-in-law.
