Edward F. Johnson was the third of the four children of Erick and Amanda (Hoikka) Johnson, Swedish and Finnish immigrants, respectively, to the United States. He was the only one of their four children to live to adulthood.

Edward was born in Quincy Township near Hancock and lived in Houghton and Hancock for all of his life, though he did leave briefly to serve in the first World War. On June 1, 1921, he married Ethel Jane Moyle, with whom he had two children. To make ends meet, he worked as a chauffeur and ticket seller for the Kerredge Theater in downtown Hancock. The Kerredge burned to the ground in 1959.

At the time of his death in 1941 following a long history of heart problems, Edward was survived by his parents, wife, son Edward, and daughter Ramona Jane. He was preceded in death by his brothers Erick and John Ronald Johnson and his sister Mamie Johnson.
