Joel was born in Finland to Antti Leander and Maria Elisabeth (Keiski) Leppala and came to the United States sometime between 1890 and 1900. He settled in Atlantic Mine, where he met Marija Evonen. They married in Hancock on February 14, 1903.
Joel was the father of ten children, most of whom are listed in the family links section. His other children were son Yalmer (1903 - 1979) and daughter Helmi (1905 - 1987).
Joel worked as a trammer in a copper mine in Winona. Trammers had arguably the most strenuous job in the mines, as they were required to load and push heavy carts full of poor rock to the surface. He was injured on the job and spent the remainder of his life walking with the assistance of a crutch. He preceded his family in death at the young age of forty-eight.
