John was a well known and well respected conductor for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He suffered from Bright's Disease and had traveled from Winnipeg to Hot Springs, Arkansas with his wife, Mary Anna, for the healing properties of the springs. He died while there, though his obituary said that his body would be returned to Winnipeg for burial.
