Son of Elkanah Bush (06/01/1783 - 1848) & his 2nd wife, Mary Ann (Polly) STONE Bush (04/21/1797 - 11/06/1832) who died in his childbirth;


Moved with his father & older brother = Samuel Stone Bush (1831 - 1877) c. 1837 (at age 4-5), & later joined by his half-sister, Sarah Frances BUSH Harris Head (1817–1850) from KY, c.1844 to Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN;


Raised at the Norwood Farm outside Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN btw 1837-1849;


Named in his father's Will, made 06/17/1847 & probated December Term, 1848, Sumner Co., TN;

1849 - 1851 attended & graduated (07/04/1851) from Bethany College, Brooke Co., VA (Now WVa) with degrees in Chemistry (1850) & Mathematics (1851) & with "first honor & others";


1852 - 1858, after graduation, he returned to Gallatin, TN where he was active on the Odd Fellows Hall Entertainment Committee;

1859 - Relocated to Louisville, KY (age 26) where his older brother, Samuel Stone Bush had relocated as an attorney after attaining his Law Degree from Bethany College, VA (which became WVA) in 1858;

1860 - Listed as an attorney in "Tanner's Louisville Directory & Business Advertiser for 1861" at 417 W. Jefferson, h 711 Sixth" along with his brother, Samuel S. Bush, p. 48;

Civil War Record with CSA:

On 11/__/1861, he enlisted in the 30th TN Infantry;

On 10/04/1862 was commissioned as an officer at the attained rank of Adjutant Major;

On 02/06/1864 was captured in battle near Union occupied Ft. Donelson, Dover, TN (which had been captured earlier by Union Gen. U.S. Grant on Feb., 1862);

On 04/17/1864, held at Camp Chase, Ohio & then transferred to Union prisoner-of-war camp at Johnson's Island on Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie, Ohio on 04/17/1864 (Have his letter to future wife, Lucy Ann BABER (1843-1900) from this prison);

On 09/19/1864, exchanged as prisoner-of-war by order of Major-General W.T. Sherman

On 05/01/1865 paroled at Greensboro, NC on 05/01/1865;


Resided in Gallatin, Sumner Co. TN 1865 - 1894;

Mentlo [1833-1896], Administrator of Dr. [Daniel Wade] Mentlo Dec'd by Judgement in the circuit court of Sumner County Tenn Rendered February 28th 1873 in the sum of thirteen hundred and sixty one 40/100 Dollars $1361 40 cents and a gold Note for $200. 00cts due in 1866 and am desirous of Securing and paying off the same and whereas on the 12th June 1865 I purchased of Raymon & Sally Head a tract of land of Six hundred and fifty acres Situated in District No _________ Sumner County dated June 12th 1865 and duly Registered

and I afterward deeded to Said Raymon & Sally Head a life interest

in Said land & Reserved the interest after their life. Now in consideration

of the premises I hereby Sell transfer and Convey to James A. Mentlo Admin'r of Dr. Mentlo Dec.'d in consideration of the Said Judgement of $1361 40cts interest in and to Said Six hundred and fifty acres Conveyed to me by Raymon & Sally Head and the boundaries of which are described in Said deed of June 12th1865 my interest being the Remainder after the Life interest of Said Raymon & Sally Head and it is said Remainder Interest that I Convey the deed of R & S Head to me and Referred to for the boundary as well as the deed to R Heard I Covenant that I am lawfully Seized of Said land and have a good Right to Convey

it and that the Same is unencumbered and I warrant the title of the Same Witness my hand and Seal this April 6th 1874 interlude[?]

He died early the next year in Jan. 1900.
