A. Ellison "Jinx" Jenkins, 78, of 594 Bailey Street, Mars Hill, died at his home Tuesday, February 10, 2004, following an extended illness.
Jinx was born in New Orleans to the late Lt. Col. Daniel P. Jenkins Sr. and Mildred Ellison Jenkins. His father, a Baptist minister and Army Chaplin, developed his love for music, church leadership and storytelling.
His mother a homemaker and community leader encouraged his desire to always be learning. His aunt, an elementary school principal, nurtured his interest in the fine arts.
He was graduated from the Academy of Richmond County, Ga., in 1942. Then he attended the Junior College of Augusta until he was called to military duty.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the European Theaters as an Storekeeper (Aviation) 2nd Class. After completing his service, he resumed his college education. In 1949, he was graduated from Furman University. While there, he met his wife, Margaret Dixie Hollowell of Hendersonville, a fellow student.In 1954, he completed his Doctorate in Theology at New Orleans Baptist Thelogical Seminary, where his parents had met on their first day there as students.
Jinx was a Professor of Religion and Philosophy for 45 years at Mars Hill Cologe. During his career there he also taugh English, French, history and sociology.
He was an active member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, where until very recently he served as deacon, choir member, Sunday school teacher and special friend to children.
A lifelong optimist, he battled various type of cancer for 12 years without complaint, while remaining active.
