Armond E. Kueter, age 94, formerly of 3314 Meadow Lane, Manitowoc, died Thursday, December 26, 2013 at St. Mary's at Felician Village in Manitowoc.
Armond was born October 27, 1919 in Sheboygan Falls, son of the late August and Laura (Bramstedt) Kueter. He attended schools in the Howards Grove area and graduated with the class of 1937 from Howards Grove High School. In 1940 he graduated from Sheboygan County Normal School and then taught for two years, grades one through eight, in a little red school house near Cascade, WI. On December 25, 1942 he married Ione Bender in Kansas City, MO. Armond served from 1942 - 1946 in the United States Army Signal Corps. He attended Radio School in Kansas City, MO and worked at the Pentagon in the United States Army Headquarters where he handled communications between Washington D.C. and the European and Japanese theaters of war. Armond taught in state graded schools in Cascade and Five Corners from 1946 - 1948. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point graduating in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated in 1953 with a Masters Degree. Armond was an elementary teacher at Adams, Madison, Garfield and Jefferson Schools until 1955. From 1955 - 1956 Armond taught in the American Dependant Schools in Schwaebisch-Gmuend, Germany. Armond taught from 1956 - 1957 at Jackson School, Manitowoc. He was the Manitowoc County Superintendent of Schools from 1960 - 1962. In 1962, Armond became the Principal of Cleveland School and Director of Transportation for the Manitowoc School System. In 1973, Armond became principal of Jefferson School until his retirement in 1982.
Armond was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church serving on the church council, twice as council president. He was extremely proud of his service as chairman of the Capitol Campaign to raise money for the new Manitowoc Public Library and his service as co-chairman of the committee to raise the funds for the renovation of the former Manitowoc County Normal School, now the "Manitowoc County Heritage Center". He was a member of the board of directors of Holiday House from its beginning in 1957 and for the next 37 years he also held offices as president, vice-president and secretary of the board. Armond was a member of the board of directors and served as treasurer of the board of Conservation Education Inc. of Manitowoc County and was involved in heading up the celebration of its 50th anniversary at Collins Marsh in May of 2004. He was a member of the Victim-Offender Mediation Program, the Izaak-Walton League, Woodland Dunes Nature Center serving on its fund-raising committee, Friends of Camp Sinawa, Friends of the Library, and a charter member of the Civil War Round Table. He was active in the Manitowoc County Historical Society and twice served as its president. He was among those instrumental in creating the Pinecrest Historical Village and often volunteered as a building guide at the village for school tours. He also represented the society as delegate for the Northeast Region of the Council for Local History Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society and served on the board of directors for the Friends of Wisconsin Historical Society. He volunteered at the Capitol Civic Center since its opening as a performing arts center and was a member of the board of directors. Armond was a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees of the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc and member of the board of directors of the Manitowoc County Retired Educators Association serving as treasurer and membership chairman of the association. He was also a member and past president of the Manitowoc Kiwanis Golden K Club and chair of parenting the first, second, and third year projects.
Armond was a life member of the AMVETS Post #99, National Education Association, Wisconsin Retired Educators, a member of Two Rivers Historical Society, Sheboygan Historical Society, Sheboygan County Research Center, Wisconsin State Historical Society and Lutheran Counseling and Family Services.
In his free time, Armond traveled to 28 countries, 49 states (missing Rhode Island) and attended 22 Elderhostel programs throughout North and Central America.
Armond received numerous awards including: the Bob Fay Manitowoc County Lifetime Achievement Award, Manitowoc Lions Club Distinguished Service Award, Ruth & John West Community Service Award, Lakeshore Technical College Foundation Service Award, Kiwanian of the Year Award, recipient of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers Chamber of Commerce Speak Up Award, Clipper City Chordsmen "Award of Harmony", Izaak-Walton League "Diamond Award" and the Lakeshore Champions of Conservation Award. Armond was featured in the Herald Times Reporter Profiles in History Centennial Celebration.
Armond is survived by his wife of 71 years: Ione Kueter, Manitowoc; three children: Larry Kueter, Denver, CO; Dennis (Jane) Kueter, Platteville; Roslyn Kueter (Rob Maruyama), Golden, CO; six grandchildren: David (Dawn) Kueter, Denver, CO; Matthew Kueter, Granby, CO; Lt Col Jeffrey (Crystal) Kueter, Silver Spring, MD; Cory Kueter, Singapore; Emily Maruyama, Golden, CO; Eric Maruyama, Golden, CO; four great grandchildren: Ryan; Kaitlyn; Derek; and Michaela Kueter, Silver Spring, MD; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Dorothy Ulness, Valders; Arlene (James) Johannes, Minneapolis; Dick Homberger, Minneapolis. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter-in-law: Nancy Kueter; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Mabel (Ted) Schneider; Norma (Edward) Siebers; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Elmer (Mildred) Kueter; Lester (LaVerne) Kueter; Gordon (Ethel) Kueter; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Fred (Martha) Bender; one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law: Orin Ulness; Janice Homberger; Luaine Quast.
Armond E. Kueter was a beloved spouse, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He will be sorely missed by many generations of relatives and friends. Armond was a sincere, kind, outgoing, fun-loving person with a gift for storytelling and a great sense of humor accompanied by a willingness to help other people. Grandchildren remember camping trips and excursions in National Parks. Generations of relatives will recall his "original" games at holiday and family gatherings. He was an avid bridge and poker player. Armond was an extremely well-liked man with a great sense of, and unconditional love for, family, community, and country.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1712 Menasha Avenue, Manitowoc. Rev. Zachary DeArmond will officiate. Military services will be accorded by the AMVETS Post #99. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Armond is survived by his wife of 71 years: Ione Kueter, Manitowoc; three children: Larry Kueter, Denver, CO; Dennis (Jane) Kueter, Platteville; Roslyn Kueter (Rob Maruyama), Golden, CO; six grandchildren: David (Dawn) Kueter, Denver, CO; Matthew Kueter, Granby, CO; Lt Col Jeffrey (Crystal) Kueter, Silver Spring, MD; Cory Kueter, Singapore; Emily Maruyama, Golden, CO; Eric Maruyama, Golden, CO; four great grandchildren: Ryan; Kaitlyn; Derek; and Michaela Kueter, Silver Spring, MD; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Dorothy Ulness, Valders; Arlene (James) Johannes, Minneapolis; Dick Homberger, Minneapolis. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter-in-law: Nancy Kueter; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Mabel (Ted) Schneider; Norma (Edward) Siebers; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Elmer (Mildred) Kueter; Lester (LaVerne) Kueter; Gordon (Ethel) Kueter; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Fred (Martha) Bender; one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law: Orin Ulness; Janice Homberger; Luaine Quast.
Armond E. Kueter was a beloved spouse, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He will be sorely missed by many generations of relatives and friends. Armond was a sincere, kind, outgoing, fun-loving person with a gift for storytelling and a great sense of humor accompanied by a willingness to help other people. Grandchildren remember camping trips and excursions in National Parks. Generations of relatives will recall his "original" games at holiday and family gatherings. He was an avid bridge and poker player. Armond was an extremely well-liked man with a great sense of, and unconditional love for, family, community, and country.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1712 Menasha Avenue, Manitowoc. Rev. Zachary DeArmond will officiate. Military services will be accorded by the AMVETS Post #99. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Manitowoc County Historical Society or any of Armond's special community interests.
