Mette Magdalene Johansen was born on April 30, 1838, Broup, Denmark. At the time of her marriage Mette was a widow, having previously been married to Christen Jensen Skov. Jens and Mette married on June 29, 1867 in Seest, Ribe, Denmark and had two daughters and two sons; then Mette passed away from stomach cancer and is buried in Denmark. Her four children are: Christine "Sine" who married Jacob Peterson, Elk Horn, IA and died in 1955; Marie Sophia "Sophie" who married Hans Peter Hansen, Harlan, IA and died in 1934; Johannes Christian "John" (later changed to Kyar) who married Ellen Mason and died in 1927; and Jens Christian who married Caroline Carlsen in 1902, in Shelby, Iowa, and died in Eloise Wayne MI on June 3, 1943.
