Marie Sophia "Sophie" Clemmensen

The Advocate Republican-Harlan, Iowa October 18, 1934

Mrs. Sophie Hansen, 66, resident of Elk Horn vicinity for 50 years and widow of the late H.P. (Hans Peter) Hansen died at 6 o'clock Thursday evening at a Harlan hospital. Death resulted from complications following a recent operation.

Ill for several years, Mrs. Hansen was taken to the hospital about two weeks ago, after her condition had become serious.

Mrs. Hansen, formerly Sophie Marie Clemmensen, was born in Denmark in 1868, and came to the United States when 16, settling in the Elk Horn community.

She was married 41 years ago to Mr. Hansen, who death occurred 13 years ago (1921). Surviving are four children: Wilfred of Des Moines; Einer of Brayton, Edith at home and Mrs. Arnold Christensen of Hamlin. Two brothers, Sheriff Fred Clemmensen and Emil Clemmensen both of Audubon and three sisters, Mrs. Andrew Jorgensen and Mrs. Jacob Petersen of Elk Horn and Mrs. Rasmus Jorgensen of Audubon also survive. Jens Kjar is one half brother.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the Elk Horn Danish Lutheran Church with the Rev. Anders Hansen officiating, Burial was at Elk Horn.

Note from Judy Holweger: Sophie was born Marie Sophia Clemmensen in Denmark to Jens and Mette Magdalene Clemmensen. Her mother, Mette, died and is buried in Denmark. Sophie came to America with her sister Christine Jensine "Sine" and her two brothers, Johannes Christian (later changed to Kyar) and Jens Christian Clemmensen. These are her surviving siblings and not as above stated in the obit.
Her father married Christine in Illinois and their children are: Henry Lauritz who died at the age of 27 of stomach cramps; Emma who married Rasmus Jorgensen in 1884; Anna Dorthea who married Andrew Jorgensen, Emil and Fred Clemmensen. Jens Kjar would be her brother but he never changed his name to Kyar and it remained Jens clemensen only with one m. Fred and Emil would be her half-brothers. Mrs. Andrew Jorgensen (Anna Dorthea) and Mrs. Rasmus Jorgensen (Emma Magdalena) would be her half-sisters.
