Called into the Christian ministry when he was 19 and he spent the rest of his life in service to God. He served as pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Norfolk and as pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Portsmouth, where he gave tireless and dedicated service for more than 25 years. He also served as president of the Tidewater Metro-Baptist Ministers Conference and vice president of the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention and he held various positions at the Hampton University Ministers Conference and in other ministerial entities.

The Rev. Beamer not only served his church community, but he also served the Portsmouth community for many years. He was appointed by the president of the United States to the local Selective Services Board, elected by the citizens of Portsmouth to serve as a member of the Portsmouth City Council and selected to serve as vice mayor of the city. He also served on the Portsmouth School Board and the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate of divinity degree by the Virginia Theological Seminary and College, and earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Virginia State College. Later, he completed additional graduate studies and doctoral level classes at the Teachers College at Columbia University and the University of Missouri in Columbia.

The Rev. Beamer was born Jan. 18, 1935, in Old Town, near Galax, Va., the eighth of 10 children born to the late Rev. Joe Bill Beamer and Daisy Hasamaclori Willis Beamer. He met and married the love of his life, Joyce Scott, of Franklin, Va., who was his life partner for more than 43 years. He cherished and adored his sons and daughters and beautiful grandchildren and he dearly loved his brothers, sisters, special cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

The entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk.
