Wife of British army officer Tom Plewman, Eliane worked for the Spanish section of the Ministry of Information during World War II. She later joined the British Special Operations Executive and was given the codename "Gaby."

In August, 1943, she was dropped in France by parachute. She worked with some French Resistance Members, who were betrayed and they were arrested. She was interrogated by the Gestapo for three weeks. In September of 1944, she was transferred to Dachau with three other SOE agents (Yolande Beekman, Madeleine Damerment and Noor Inayat Khan.) They were all executed at Dachau.Eliane Plewman was born Eliane Browne-Bartroli in Marseille France in 1917 - she was the daughter of a British Father and a Spanish Mother, she was educated in England and Spain. She spoke, English, Spanish and French.After completing college Plewman moved to Leicester to work for an Import Company.
After the outbreak of The Second World War Eliane worked for the British Embassy in Madrid and Lisbon. In 1942 she was sent to Britain to work for the Spanish Section of the Ministry of Information. She later met and married British Army Officer Thomas Plewman.
Eliane later joined the French Section of the Special Operations Executive, her knowledge of languages had been brought to the attention of Section Head Maurice Buckmaster.
Plewman trained as a courier and given the codename 'Gaby' was parachuted into France and worked in the areas of..Marseille,Roquebrune and St Raphael.
The network was betrayed in March 1944 and Plewman was also arrested. She was brutally interrogated and tortured by the Gestapo for 4 weeks - then transferred to Fresnes Prison. Eliane was transferred to..Karlsruhe Prison in Germany. Later in September 1944 Plewman was transferred to Dachau Concentration Camp for execution. After being forced to kneel down, she was shot in the back of the head and then cremated.
