Catharine, Timothy and all their children were born and raised in Fuerty, County Roscommon, Ireland.

Timothy left in 1846 to the United States in hopes to earn enough money to send for the rest of the family. After three years of working in New York, he sent for the family, Catharine, Bridget 14, John 10, Martin 8, and Catharine 4.

In 1854 son John went to Zanesville Ohio to visit his sister Bridget Manion, then proceeded west to the Mississippi. Family information suggests he joined Kit Carson, the famous frontiersman, at St Louis Missouri for at least one trip west.

From Elaine Lewis, 'Catharine's maiden name should read Brogan. The family wasn't sure for many years and would sometimes use one or the other, Grogin / Brogan. '

Martin Murphy's Civil War file at NARA listed his mother as 'Brogan'.

Martin Murphy's marriage certificate to Katharine Foley on Jan 24 1875 Prescott, Pierce Co. WI, states he was born in 'Tory, Ross, Ireland' to Timothy Murphy and Katharine Bragen. Katharine Foley's parents Edward Foley and Elizabeth Foley.

Also known as 'Catherine Grogin or Broghan' - Ancestor file 1R33-WH3.
