ABILENE - J. Y. Little, age 98, went to be with the Lord on May 4, 2002, in Abilene, Texas, where he had lived since December, 2001.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. John Petty assisted by Dr. Bill Blackburn. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville.
Mr. Little was born March 8, 1904, in Wilmer, Texas, to Judge Carson and Ella Little. He became a Christian at an early age in the First Baptist Church in Wilmer.
On March 14, 1925, he married Ora Carpenter. She died June 28, 1928. He married Alyeene Ault of Weslaco, Texas, on April 18, 1930. She preceded him in death on April 7, 1991. On November 28, 1992, he married Mattie Rhoden Little of Kerrville.
Mr. Little moved to Kerrville in April, 1927, where he started working for the C. C. Butt Grocery Co. on July 10, 1927. Later, C. C. Butt grocery became H-E-B. Grocery Co. He worked as manager of various H-E-B stores in the state until his retirement in March 1969. He then continued with H-E-B as manager of H-E-B Lodge at Kerrville. At the time of his retirement from the Lodge, he had worked for H-E-B a total of 55 years, giving him the record as the longest number of years of service to H-E-B.
Mr. Little served his church and community in many ways. He was ordained as Deacon at First Baptist Church in Weslaco in 1930 at the age of 25. He continued to serve in this capacity in the different churches where he and his family lived. He was a lifetime member at Trinity Baptist Church.
J. Y., along with others, formed and named Trinity Baptist Church. He was a 25-year member of the Kiwanis Club, having served in Kerrville, Alice and Beeville, Texas. He organized and started the clubs in Alice and Beeville.
He also was a Mason. He became a Master Mason in Weslaco in 1931, became a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Knight Templar and a Shriner.
He also enjoyed outside sports, "42" and sharing time and meals with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie Rhoden Little; two daughters, Mary Nell Froelich and husband, Jim, of Alexandria, Va., and Patsy Stephenson of Abilene; one sister, Mamie Dee Ault, of Corpus Christi: two sisters-in-law, Helen Ault of Kerrville and Dot Boothe of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren, Kay and David Taft of Manassas, Va., Carol and Dick Davis of Newport News, Va., Jamie and Steve Stokes of Raleigh, N.C., Danny Stephenson, David and Kayla Stephenson, all of Abilene and Donna and David Kilgo of McKinney, Texas; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first two wives, Ora Carpenter Little and Alyeene Little; son-in-law Dan Stephenson; sisters, Cora Patterson and Lucille Matthews; and a brother, Ruben Little.
Pallbearers will be Danny and David Stephenson, David Kilgo, Ray Little, Bill Ault and Leonard Mosley.
Memorial remembrances may be made to the Library Funds, Trinity Baptist Church, 800 Jackson Rd., Kerrville, TX 78028.
Mr. Little was a true and loyal man, friend to many and will be missed by each of us. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
