He enlisted June 29, 1861, in Company I, 21st Infantry Regiment, Army of Virginia, and was present on the muster rolls on November and December 1864. He was wounded August 9, 1862, at Cedar Mountain. His commanding officers were Colonel Cunningham and Captain Samuel F. Swanson.

He is also listed on the Union Prisoner of War list. He was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865. At the time of his death of tuberculosis, he was attended by Dr. Fuller of Sandy River.
