Charles H. Bounty was born in 1832 in New York, the oldest of about 8 children born to Joseph Bounty and Margaret Mary Brewer. His middle name may have been Henry, but that is not certain.

Both of his parents were born in Long Island City, New York. His mother often went by the name Mary, as well as Margaret.

Among the siblings known for Charles are:
John H., Lydia, Thomas, Mary Ann, Elizabeth known as Lizzie, and John. There was also a child born in 1848 & died the same year.

About 1862, Charles married Mary Emma Francis. They went on to have 14 children, but by 1900, only 4 were still living. Among 11 of the children known for Charles & Mary are:
Anna, Mary, Ella, Charles Joseph, Lucy, Leonard Hildebrandt, Catherine, Emma, Ada Irene, Oscar & a baby girl born in 1885.

In July 1863, Charles and his brother John H, registered for the Civil War draft. It was always assumed that they served with the 47th New York Colored Infantry Regiment, which was actually out of Louisiana, but there are conflicting records about this. They may have only registered & not actually served at all.

As bi-racial men in the Civil War, to be part of this unit was quite an undertaking, for sure. Several of Charles's sons & grandsons went on to do military service.

Charles died at age 63 years old as a result of a hemorrhage of the lungs.
He lived at 333 Shoman Place in Long Island City at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary.
