Laura is a daughter of Lewis Knight and Emilie Crain. Her father was born in Granville County North Carolina and her mother in Bedford County, Tennessee. The Crain family is the origin of the Cherokee and Seminole blood which family members say gave Laura her spunk and independent nature.

She first married a soldier, James Seale of Leon County, Texas about 1870. It is believed he died shortly afterward, as no trace of him or children has yet been found.

Laura married (2) William Andrew Bates of Lampasas, who had been born in Indiana. Laura was 30 and he, 33; it is not known if he was a bachelor. They wed 29 September 1878 at Lampasas.

Their first son, John Newell Bates (Sr.) was born the following year in November. He married Emma Rowena (who had also married Raymond Bean). They had one known son, John Newell Bates Jr., born at Lampasses in 1910 (John Jr. married Verna Mae Matchen).

Their second son, William Walton Bates was born in 1881 at Lampasas and little is known of Laura E. Knight Bates afterward.

William Andrew Bates married (2) Alice Utopia Holder at Burnet County Texas 18 August 1885, living 10 more years. Alice was 17 years his junior and lived an additional 46 years. She is buried in the same cemetery under the name, "Alice U. Bates".

Note: No gravestone found for Laura at this date.
