He was the son of John Ryer Lydecker and Elizabeth Salter Ward Lydecker.
On September 21, 1869 as Garrett J. Lydecker, he married Delia W. Buel at Wayne County, Michigan.
They were the parents of one child.
∼United States Army engineer officer. Son of the the deputy collector of the port of New York. He was the winner in a competitive examination instituted by General Sickles, when in Congress, among public schools in his congressional district to award the warrant of a cadet appointment to West Point. Leydecker eventually graduated with the West Point class of 1864, ranking first of the 27 cadets in his class. He was at once commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, and was assigned to the staff of General Meade during the Civil War. He served forty years as an Army engineer; after the Civil War he spent the rest of his career in river and harbor works. He served in New York harbor, made a survey of the Great Lakes, and taught engineering at West Point. He also served under General Schofield's command. He died at his home in Detroit.
