Denis R. Atterberg, 59 of Keokuk died Monday, December 16, 2013 at Lexington Square in Keokuk, IA. He was born February 5, 1954 in Keokuk the son of John Russell and Lela Shaw Atterberg. In 1973 he was united in marriage to Trudy Stamper. To this union three children were born. They later divorced. Denis graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1972. He had been employed at the Keokuk Area Hospital and then at Hubinger's in Keokuk. Denis was a member of the New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk, IA. In his younger years, Denis liked to play the guitar. He was very creative and enjoyed staining glass. He loved to socialize and join his friends for coffee at various coffee shops in town. Denis had been in Lexington Square for the past twenty years where he received excellent care by the loving staff. He was very special to many of the staff members who will miss his wonderful smile and amazing attitude. He is survived by one daughter, Carey Thompson and her husband Lonnie of Keokuk, two sons, Caleb Atterberg and his wife Hawley of Keokuk and Chad Atterberg of Keokuk, six grandchildren, Colton Atterberg, Camryn Atterberg, Lucas Thompson, Weston Thompson, Ally Atterberg and Zachary Atterberg, his mother, Lela Shaw Liegerot of Hamilton, IL, and three brothers, Jack Atterberg and his wife Sharon of Keokuk, Mark Atterberg and his wife Susie of Keokuk and Tracy Atterberg and his wife Linda of Quincy, IL. He was preceded in death by his father, John Russell Atterberg, step-father, Byron "Lug" Liegerot, and sister-in-law, Cheryl Atterberg. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was the Sandusky Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Testament Christian Church.
