Jacob was the youngest child of Jacob Rife's twelve children, and possibly the first to come to Benton County, AR. He was once quoted as knowing something of the early history of his family, and he said that the Rifes were from Germany. Jo Anne Rife saw a book in the Assessor's office in the Benton County Courthouse (would now be called a "Vanity Press" publication) that was published in 1903. It had a brief biography of Jacob S. Rife which said, "His father was born in Pennsylvania or Virginia, and his grandfather was born in Germany." This is most likely hearsay evidence, since the younger Jacob S. was only a year old when his father died, it is still a possibility that he had it right, and the Rifes who came to Benton County between 1870 and 1880 were third generation Americans.
