Marion Howe enlisted for three years service as a Private in Company H of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, at Adrian, Michigan. He was mustered into Federal service on the same date. He was discharged for disability at Minor's Hill, Virginia, on December 10, 1861. On August 2, 1862, Marion enlisted for three years service as a Corporal in Company G of the Eighteenth Michigan Infantry, at Jonesville, Michigan. His commanding officer was Colonel Charles Doolittle who had previously served with Marion while a member of the Fourth Michigan Infantry. On September 23, 1862, Marion was one of over sixty Union soldiers taken prisoner by General John Hunt Morgan's Second Kentucky Cavalry at Snow's Pond, Kentucky. Marion was paroled shortly afterward (approximately November 11-15, 1862). He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on May 15, 1865 and was discharged from service on June 21, 1865.

His minor child got his Civil War Pension in December 1908.
