John William Brennan grew up in Valders, Wisconsin and entered the United States Military Academy in 1944. He was the first soccer team captain and graduated in 1948 in the top 10 percent of his class.

He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers and his initial tour of duty was in Okinawa, Japan. Later he was assigned to combat duty in Korea. Returning to the United States he earned a Master of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois.

In 1952 he was an instructor at Fort Belvior, Virginia in the Army's Engineer School. He attended the Army's Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and returned to West Point as an instructor.

Promoted to Lieut. Colonel he returned to Korea where he commanded an engineer battalion. Returning to the United States he held positions at Yucca Flats Nuclear Testing site in Nevada and the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

He was assigned as regional district engineer in Vicksburg, Mississippi, responsible for all water and flood control projects along the Mississippi from Memphis to Natchez in 1968. During the Vietnam War he was in Long Bein in 1971 as an engineer group commander with over 10,000 combat engineers. He ended his military duty as Chief of Operations at the Army Material Command, Alexandria, Virginia. He retired from the United States Army in 1976. He was twice awarded the Legion of Merit, the Army's second highest non-combat award.

As a civilian he became the Vice President of Latin American business operations for Charles T. Main Professional Engineers of Boston, Massachusetts. He managed national scale projects in Paraguay and Panama.

He returned to Greenville, Mississippi as the Port Director in 1982. He retired in 1985 and in 1994 moved from Greenville to Dallas, Texas to be near his children and grandchildren. In 1998 he became a resident of the Broadway Manor Nursing Home in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

He was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He received numerous professional awards for his civil engineering expertise.

He was survived by his wife and a son of Muskogee, Oklahoma; a son of Houston, Texas; a son stationed in Iraq; a daughter of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; a brother of Manitowoc, Wisconsin and eight grandchildren.
