Sandy Smith, 47, of Portales, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at her home.

She was born Oct. 13, 1958, in Portales to Ruby and Roy McCain.

She moved to Roswell with her family when she was 4 years old. They returned to Portales 10 years later. She worked for a year at Boothe Pharmacy before going to work at Roosevelt General Hospital as a pharmacist’s assistant and medical records clerk. She married Mike Smith on Oct. 9, 1976, at the Tinsley Crossing Church near Portales. In 1981, she moved to Samnorwood, Texas. She attended college at Clarendon Junior College and earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in speech pathology. She graduated magna cum laude in 1990 from ENMU. She was employed as a speech pathologist, traveling between the Portales, Roswell and House schools. In 1995, she went to work as an instructor at ENMU, and served as head of the speech and hearing department until her health forced her retirement in 2000.

She was a member of Faith Triumphant Church in Portales.

Family members said she was an avid reader, enjoyed painting and had a special ministry to those who were in prison.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Stoney Lee Smith.

Survivors include her sons, Tabor Smith of Dallas and Tyler Smith (and wife, Angela) of Portales; a grandchild, Titus Smith of Portales; her parents, Ruby and Roy McCain of Portales; and a brother, Steve McCain of Portales.

The Rev. James Terry will officiate.

Chuck Teague, Charlie Teague, Jared Vaughn and George Rowan as well as family members and close friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund in her name at Faith Triumphant School in Portales.
