Professional Dancer. He was an influential Danish choreographer and ballet master. Having attended the ballet school of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen he made his debut in 1925. After studies in the Soviet Union and United States, he was made a solo-dancer in 1929, and from 1932 to 1951, he was the ballet master of the Royal Danish Ballet, founding the international recognition that the company has enjoyed ever since. He composed some 25 ballets for the company, several of which were inspired by folklore such as "The Spanish Bolero" in 1934 and the Greenlandic "Quarrtsiluni" in 1942. His ultimate masterpiece is the ballet "Études" in 1948 created with the Danish composer Knudåge Riisager. It has been performed more than 2500 times by ballet companies all over the world. From 1952 to 1963, he was the ballet director at l'Opéra in Paris where he created a further number of ballets. He was married twice: to Margot Lander and to Toni Lander.
