He was the son of John Martin and Louisa Jane (Kelso) Routt and married Emma Johnson. A news posting and his obituary follow:

TO MY FRIENDS --

For the last five weeks I have been confined in my home by the first real sickness I have had in several years. During these five weeks I have received a number of letters, inquiries at my home from many friends, a large number of beautiful flowers, and many inquiries of my friends by people who have not been to my home. It would be almost impossible for me to acknowledge these kindnesses of my friends either by letter or by person, and yet I want you to know that there has not been an inquiry, there has not been a visit, there has not been a bouquet of flowers, and there has not been an expression of interest in me that is not very deeply appreciated both by my wife and myself. I take this means of saying to you, one and all, that I appreciate all these expressions of interest in whatever way they came, and how I want to thank you, one and all, for the interest you have shown in me, and I want to say to you further that this interest of my friends has assisted my wife and me very much in pulling through these five weeks. I can only hope that should you in the future be unfortunate enough to get sick that you will be strengthened through your sickness by the same interest you have shown in me.

With the kindest regards and best wishes for you and yours, I am your friend, J. E. ROUTT.
