Civil War Veteran.

He entered the 6th Regiment Missouri Infantry as a 2nd Class Musician earning $20.00/month, and was discharged as a 3rd Class Musician earning $17.00/month.

He married Catherine Fredenburg on May 31, 1865. In the 1870 federal census (Jersey County), the family is listed as:

Michael Grether M 32 Missouri
Catharine Grether F 22 Illinois
Cassius M Grether M 4 Illinois
Mary J Grether F 2 Illinois
Clara E Grether F 0 Illinois

The 1880 shows the couple had two more children: Ethel in 1872 and Carrol in 1875.

An Oct. 15, 1874 Alton Evening Telegraph article states that Mike Grether of Jersey County died as a result of accidentally shooting himself during a gunning outage, leaving his wife and several children in destitute circumstances. He appears to have been the only Michael Grether in Jersey County at the time, so it would appear that this is Kathryn's husband. If so, she would have been pregnant when he died. I see that Carroll Grether died April 27, 1889. I wonder where he is buried.

Kathryn married Charles Blish on Jan. 1, 1882. In 1900, she is listed in the federal census (in Jersey Co) as Kathryn Blish with the following chlldren:

Kathryn Blish F 48 Illinois
Cassius Grethers M 32 Illinois (son, widowed)
Charles H Grethers M 17 Illinois (son)
Clara B Grethers F 8 Illinois (daughter)
