Hugh Newton Long was the son of Hugh Nelson Long 1847 and Seleta Jane "Leddie" Berry 1850 – 1932. Hugh was an only child to Leddie, although he had some half siblings.

Tennessee State Marriages,confirmed that on Nov. 13, 1889 Hugh Newton Long married Arcadia Berry in Hawkins Co., Tennesse. From this union the following children were born: Lloyd L Long 1890; May G Long 1893; Nora R Long 1894; William H Long 1897; Florence B Long 1899; Roy R Long 1902; Isaac N Long 1907; Emma Lee Long 1908; Lewis H Long 1912; Clyde G Long 1916 and Sarita E Long 1919.

In the 1900 census, Newton and Arcadia were living on a farm near White Horn. Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Their first five children had been born and he had his farm paid for.

In 1910 Newton was now a rural route mail carrier and their 19 year old son Lloyd was a teacher in a public school.

In 1920 Newt was now working in the General Store as was 2 of his older daughters, May and Nora. Lloyd and William had married and moved to their own homes. Their were 3 children in High School and 2 in elementary school and two toddlers at home.

The 1930 census has not been found.

The Tombstone for Arcadia Berry Long revealed that Newt's dearly loved wife and mother of his children had passed away on Aug. 11, 1935. Her death certificate has yet to be found. A burial plot was selected for his dear Arcadia in the McCullough Cemetery in Bulls Gap, and Newt gathered his family and friends at her funeral and burial to bid his beloved Arcadia to "Rest in Peace"

The 1940 census revealed that Newton was a widower. He had completed 4 years of high school education. Newt owned his home and his house was valued at $200.00. He working as an electrician, and had earned $1,500 the previous year. He also reported that he had other income. Two of his granddaughters, Arrah and Waunits Long, (names were probably spelled wrong) were living with him. Arrah was working as a waitress in a cafe and Waunita was in her second year of high school. Newt was living at this same location in Bulls Gap in 1935 but the girls had came to live with him after 1935.

Some time after the 1940 census, Newton married Zona Moore. This was revealed in his death certificate.

Tennessee, Death Records, confirm that Newton Long went to meet his Lord on May 6, 1957 at the Tecoma Hospital in Greeneville, Greene, Tennessee. The informant for his death certificate was his daughter, Mrs. Florence Tucker. Newton's body was taken to the Homer Steward Funeral Home to be prepared for burial the next day. Newton was buried in the grave beside his loving wife, where they both "Rest in Peace" (Bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
