William G. Cutler's "History of the State of Kansas", 1885, describes "Doc" Campbell, as he was known, as a self-made man. In 1865 he began teaching school [in Adams Co., Ohio] during the winter and attending school in the summer until 1870, when he came to Council Grove [Ks.]. There he taught school for one year. In 1871 he began the study of medicine with Dr. J.H. Bradford, while clerking in the local drug store. By 1878 he had bought out Dr. Bradford and was operating the store himself. In the fall of 1880 he was elected County Superintendent on the Republican ticket and in 1892 was re-elected without opposition. In 1878 "Doc" returned to Ohio and married Miss Lizzie McIntire. They lived in Council Grove and raised six children: Oscar and Mac preceeded their father in death; Grace (wife of Lewis S. Harvey), Edna, Howard and Dorothy. A.G. Campbell was the son of George Campbell (1818-1898) and Sarah Ann Griffith (1819-1868).
