Freda Marie Bates, 77, of South Sioux City passed away Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital

Services will be 10 a.m Thursday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kevin Miller officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the funeral home immediately following the service Thursday. Burial will be in City Cemetery, Ponca, Neb. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Freda was born on April 19, 1936, in Yankton, S.D., the daughter of Fred E. and Marcilo A. (Haberer) Kaiser. She served in the Women's Army Corps from Aug. 13, 1954 to Jan. 18, 1957.

She married Alvin L. Bates on Nov. 5, 1975 in Elk Point, S.D. She was employed as a CNA at several nursing homes in the Siouxland area.

She was a longtime member of First Evangelical Free Church in Sioux City.

Survivors include a son, Kevin Richard Post of Mobile, Ala.; a stepson, Donald Matthew Bates of Dakota City; two daughters, Debbie Marie Post and Pamela Sue and her husband, Raymond Nanek, all of South Sioux City; four stepdaughters, Julie Ann McManigal and Cindy Joy Bligh, both of South Sioux City, Kathy Mae Welch of Hubbard Neb., and Jani Sue Konradi of Storm Lake, Iowa; a half brother, Wick Shankle of Dangerfield, Texas; a sister, Julie Cole of Rohnert Park, Calif. a half sister, Jae Cathleen Garmen of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; several great- stepgrandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin on Nov. 2, 2006 in South Sioux City.

Pallbearers will be Scott, Howie and Reed Haberer, Bob, Greg and Mike Hansen and Donnie Bates.
