George L. Bradbury, Sr., Major, US Army (Retired)

On November 11th the nation will once again pause to remember and honor the veterans both living and dead, which served her so gallantly. Veterans will gather in the halls of the VFW and American Legion Posts and share stories of days long past. They will talk of battles fought and battles won. However, this Veterans Day will be marked by yet another empty place at the table.

Another member of "The Greatest Generation" has answered the call to come home. On October 26, 2005, at the age of 90, George L. Bradbury, Sr., departed his earthly life and rejoined his beloved wife Genevieve in Heaven.

He is survived by two sons, George Jr., (May) and Ken (Diane) and two grandchildren, Brian and Erin.

George was born July 9, 1915 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the US Army in 1934 and was selected to attend Infantry Officers Candidate School (IOCS) in 1942. After completing IOCS he was assigned to the 29th Infantry Division. It was during this time that George met, courted and on February 6, 1943 married the love of his life Genevieve. On June 6, 1944, "D-Day", as a lieutenant in the 29th Infantry Division, he lead his platoon across Omaha Beach. Several days after the landing, a German bullet found it's mark and George was hospitalized for two years and he was awarded the Purple Heart. Once released from the hospital George continued to serve in the Army. He completed tours of duty in Korea, Iceland, Japan, and at several posts within the United States. He retired from the Army in 1958. His entire 24 years of honorable and faithful service were marked by his steadfast devotion to duty and his love of country. Upon retiring from active service George relocated his family to San Jose, California.

In 1959 he began his second career with Lockheed Missiles & Space in Sunnyvale California. He continued working for Lockheed until his retirement in 1981. George always wanted to take Genevieve around the world to places he had seen while in the Army. He did just that. He and his wife enjoyed spending time together and visiting interesting places across the globe.

George lost Genevieve in 2000 but he remained in the family home until he was 88 years old. He loved to tend his gardens, which were the envy of everyone. He loved the holidays and birthdays, his excitement was like a "kid at Christmas" anytime there was a reason to celebrate. His 90th birthday celebration is one we will all fondly remember.

Tonight when the bugle sounds Taps may George L. Bradbury Sr., Major US Army (Retired) find peace and rest. He will be missed and loved by his family and friends now and forever.
