Rebecca was the (only known) wife of James Grover Sr. of Gravesend, Long Island, and Middletown, East New Jersey. She is presumed to be the mother of the five children he named in his Dec. 1685 will (see his memorial). This would put their marriage probably in the 1640s in Gravesend or possibly Massachusetts. Based on this, her birth year is "guesstimated" as about 1625.

In James's Dec. 1685 will, he bequeathed to Rebecca possession of his entire estate for her support and maintenance during her widowhood. However, she outlived her husband by less than a year. Her funeral expenses were accounted for in James's estate papers under entries dated Nov. 1686.

NOTE: Online (secondary) sources suggest that Rebecca was the daughter of William Cheeseman of Gravesend, who was another of the first settlers of Middletown, NJ, in 1665. I have not seen documentation of this, and believe it to be speculation. I welcome proof otherwise. -Joseph R. Klett

Gravesite Details

Rebecca's and her husband James's funerals/burial are referenced in James's estate papers. Presumably they were laid to rest in a family burial plot on their property in Middletown, Monmouth Co., East New Jersey, in the area that became Tinton Falls.
