SOUTH ROYALTON, VERMONT - Barbara S. Pettengill, 93, died Thursday, January 9, 2014 at her home in South Royalton, VT.

She was born on October 18, 1920 in Sharon, VT, the daughter of Clifton and Lucy (Preston) Brown. Barbara grew up on her family's dairy farm and attended school at the Broad Brook one-room schoolhouse in Sharon. She attended South Royalton High School where she graduated in 1938. After her graduation, she enrolled in Gifford School of Nursing in Randolph, VT, graduated in 1940 and worked for a short time as a Registered Nurse at Gifford Hospital and later at the Windsor Hospital in Windsor, VT.

On December 25, 1941, she married Arthur G. Pettengill of Sharon. They lived in Alabama while Arthur was in the service and moved to Waterbury Center, VT in 1945. In 1960 they made their home in South Royalton. Barbara was an avid supporter of her children's activities, especially their sports. She was an advocate for girls sports and was their #1 Fan. She volunteered for many years at Well Child Clinics and Blood Drawings. For over thirty years Barbara and her husband Arthur spent winters in St. Cloud, FL.

She was a member of the United Church of South Royalton, South Royalton Home Dem Club, United Church Women (since 1960), Rising Sun Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Regional Treasurer for the Salvation Army. She enjoyed spending time with her family, knitting, quilting, vegetable gardening and canning, playing cards and shuffleboard with her neighbors.

She is survived by a son, Arthur H. Pettengill and his wife Helen of Chiefland, FL; two daughters, Jean Adams and her husband Steve of Hartland, VT and Jane Huppee and her husband Jerry of Tunbridge, VT; five grandsons; five great grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Tucker of Berlin, VT and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur G. Pettengill, on September 8, 2006; a brother, Donald Brown, and two sisters, Virginia White and Dorothy Neill.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Church of South Royalton in South Royalton, VT with Rev. Joshua Moore and Pastor Andrew Mercaldo officiating. The burial will be private in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sharon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse & Hospice of VT and NH, 66 Benning Street, Suite 6, West Lebanon, NH 03784-3407.
