Dr. Macel Marteva Wheeler, 54, of Highland Heights, Ky., formerly of Ravenswood, departed this life Nov. 20, 2004, at her home. She was born April 8, 1950, in Milton, W. Va., a daughter of Doris Kimball Wheeler of Ravenswood and the late Clyde Wheeler.

She attended Ravenswood schools, grades one through 12, having graduated in 1968. She received her Bachelor of Arts and master’s degrees from Marshall University. To further her education in geography, she attended and received her doctoral degree from the University of Kentucky (1978), where she worked as an assistant professor in the geography department.

Macel was a member of the faculty of Northern Kentucky University for 27 years, where she served as coordinator of the geography department. Under her leadership, the NKU geography program expanded to include a concentration in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Her areas of expertise included cultural geography, North America, map studies and GIS, and reading skills. She also made contributions in brownfields research.

Macel loved to laugh and enjoyed seeing others having fun. She was an avid traveler and enjoyed music, drama and art. She remained active in her college sorority, Phi Mu.

Survivors in additon to her mother, are a sister, Ellen (Ron) Emmerson of Tucson, Ariz.; nephews, Todd (Sara) Emmerson of Geneva, Ill., and Jason (Suzi) Emmerson of Parker, Colo.; a special aunt, Dorothy Sayre, of Cottageville; and many friends throughout the country.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her loving grandparents, James and Vada Wheeler of Mount Alto, W. Va. and Baxter and Ora Kimble of Sierra Vista, Ariz.

In keeping with Macel's love of education, a fund has been established in her memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Dr. Macel M. Wheeler Geography Scholarship Fund, c/o NKU History and Geography Department, Nunn Drive, Highland Heights, KY 41076.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at First Baptist Church, Ann St., Ravenswood, with the Rev. Ken Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery, Mount Alto. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Casto Funeral Home, Ravenswood, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
