Martin Burnette was a singer in Burke Co., NC. He worked in one of the saw mills on North Fork during the week. Martin Burnette & Claude McAfee got into an argument over one of Jesse Fate's daughters. Claude got his gun and shot Martin in the heart in the doorway of the North Fork Church. All of it was witnessed by William Nelson Burnette.

As a result of an affray at North Fork, on Ivy, last Sunday, Martin Burnette is dead and Claud McAfee is in the Mission Hospital, at Asheville, dangerously cut, and William Burnette is in the County Jail at Asheville.
